About National Service Scheme (NSS)

The National Service Scheme (NSS) is a Central Sector Scheme of Government of India, Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports. It provides an opportunity to the student youth of 11th & 12th Class of schools at +2 Board level and student youth of Technical Institution, Graduate & Post Graduate at colleges and University level of India to take part in various government led community service activities & programmes.

The sole aim of the NSS at Vaagdevi Engineering College, one among the top engineering colleges in Telangana is to provide hands-on experience to young students in delivering community service. National Service Scheme started on September 24, 1969, during the Gandhi Centenary Year. Initially formed in 37 universities with 40,000 volunteers, the scheme has grown over the years and it is implemented today with an involvement of more than 2.6 million volunteers spread over in 200 Universities, Polytechnics and +2 Systems.

The number of students strength increased from 40,000 to over 3.8 million up to the end of March 2018 students in various universities, colleges and institutions of higher learning have volunteered to take part in various community service programmes.

NSS unit at Vaagdevi Engineering College gives the students an opportunity to develop the qualities of leadership and sense of social consciousness in them through programmes organised that require their services in homes for the blind, orphanages, general hospitals etc. Camps are arranged in the city or nearby villages.

The Motto of NSS is "Not me but you" which reflects the essence of selfless service to the community. NSS is a student-centred programme in collaboration with nearby communities offering vast scope for students to interact with people which teaches students what they cannot learn from theory classes.

NSS UNIT

Our NSS unit established in the year 2018 with the number of student volunteers 100 from various departments.

Main activities of NSS unit:

To create awareness regarding environment protection, plantation, blood donation, organ donation, medical camp, road safety, services at orphanages & old age homes, importance of education in slum areas, importance of girl child education etc.

The NSS Badge – Proud to Serve the Nation

All the youth volunteers who opt to serve the nation through the NSS led community service wear the NSS badge with pride and a sense of responsibility towards helping the needy.

The Konark wheel in the NSS badge having 8 bars signifies the 24 hours of a day reminding the wearer to be ready for service of the nation round the clock.

Red colour in the badge signifies energy and spirit displayed by the NSS volunteers.

The Blue colour signifies the cosmos of which the NSS is a tiny part, ready to contribute its share for the welfare of mankind.

Major Activities

National Integration Camp (NIC) – Organized every year with duration of 7 days. Around 200 NSS volunteers participate in these camps conducted across different parts of India.

Adventure Program – Adventure camps are conducted in Himalayan regions and Arunachal Pradesh including trekking, water rafting, parasailing and skiing.

NSS Republic Day Parade Camp – Conducted every year in Delhi between January 1–31 where selected NSS volunteers participate in Republic Day Parade.

National Youth Festivals – Organized from 12th to 16th January every year by Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports with participation of around 1500 NSS volunteers.
